What Mashable means--they created the list--by social media, are different forms of communication used to engage customers. So they're talking about blogs, photo and video sites, etc.
It means that blogs and discussion boards are being used by corporate marketers to create a positive image. To be succesfull participating in the conversations and building a community are key instrumentals. It's a great way to achieve success although it's hard to measure ROI.
