NYC Century 2006

It was a beautiful day for the 2006 NYC Century. This year I got there on time and finished in 7 hours 22 minutes moving time. I captured this year's ride on my Garmin Forerunner 301. Below is the data from the MotionBased record which you can view for a while before it gets archived. The GPS data seemed to be a bit off because it recorded under 100 miles when the route is apparently more than 100.

I also exported the route's map data so you can view the route in Google Maps.

It's a bit of a slow century, because of all of the city traffic lights. One nice thing about knowing how to trackstand is that you don't have to clip in and out at all of them. This year I had fun, didn't bonk and felt great at the end! We even got to ride a lap or two at the Kissena Velodrome. I got one flat, from a rear wheel slice on that awful bike path on the East Side. But, it was a great day otherwise. I started at 6:20AM and finished at 3PM. I didn't take any photos, but you can see other people's on flickr.

Congratulations! What a cool ride -- and a great accomplishment :)

Thanks! I must be doing something right. I had no day after pain at all this year, although I did sleep about 11 hours after I got home. I also rode 80 miles of the Northfork Century a couple of weeks ago, so I guess my fitness level was still good to go. Bailed out on that one after riding in the rain for the last 3 hours.

Congrats!! Looks like a great century.

Tip - try applying MB Gravity to your MotionBased activity. It'll improve your elevation data and should remove the spike. This change should also make your distance data more accurate. More info at the following link:

Thanks, Mike. I was wondering why I recorded 97 miles when others were getting over 100 at the end.

You're GPS is correct. It was less than 100 miles or near exactly 100 miles, no more. I erased my track log (Garmin Legend C) at the start so I didn't register rolling into the line up or picking up my turn guide, and turned it off as soon as I crossed the finish. I also stopped tracking at rest stops because nobody needs to include the distance between the Prospect Park rest stop and the nearest toilet. The mileage I have is 99.67 miles, and my cycling computer (in kilometers) concurs with the result.

I use SportTracks, and export to Google Earth. It gives me a more trophy-worthy image, with the track superimposed on a sattelite image that I can manipulate to add or subtract features--like county names, whether to include road markings or not, and so forth.

In any case, your Forerunner is correct within a mile or two.

Thanks, Sprocketeer, for confirming the distance. I used SportTracks on a PC for a while, but prefer MotionBased because it works on a Mac.
